Life happens.  Knit’n From the Heart represents my lifelong dream to own a fiber shop and to focus and share my creative passions.  At a young age, I learned to knit, crochet, sew, and quilt from my mother.  My dream was derailed when I became a single mom with two small children. I needed to find a full-time career – twenty years later I still have it to this day.  But knitting has always endured.

Family Business.  In 2007, Larry thought it was time I fulfilled my dream, and we took over From the Heart gift and yarn store from
Meet Pam
I've been working at Knit'n From the Heart for two years.  I enjoy working at the shop, meeting new knitters, and finding out what projects are keeping them busy.  I am always crafting of some sort.  I spent many years doing counted cross-stitch and would sometimes even work on a project while commuting on the city bus.  Gasp!  Crafting in public?

Just six years ago, I decided to try my hand at knitting and took my first knitting class. I'm still learning so many new techniques and skills and love every minute of it!  I try to knit during all my spare time, but my job and family sometimes get in the way. So now I knit in public all the time!  If you see me knitting at a concert or swimming lessons or the coffee shop, make sure to give me a friendly smile and a knowing wink.

OK...I'll be honest...I'm not a knitter or crocheter, but I play one in the shop. I guess you could call me the IT/maintenance/gopher guy. Oh...and yes...I am one of the store owners. Since opening Knit'n from the Heart over three years ago, I have received some strong pressure from the other owner (who happens to be my wife) and our staff to take up the craft. However, much of my time since my recent semi-retirement is primarily distributed between golf and watching sports on TV. Thus, I have been successful in deflecting the pressure.

On the other hand, I do enjoy my time in the shop (knitters and crocheters are mostly women you know) and plan to spend more time there becoming more involved in the day-to-day operations. Who knows...maybe a couple of knitting needles in my hands will be in my future.

Debbie Murphy.  We turned it into a full-service yarn shop and have attracted a fantastic team that shares my dream. The shop has grown from there – knitters and crocheters from all walks of life – moms, professionals, kids, new and seasoned knitters – join us weekly.  We are known for our service projects throughout the year, fun events and social knitting groups.

Vacation and Down Time.  I have a “vacation” every week when you will find me in the store most Friday evenings, weekends and holidays.  I particularly love working with reps and thinking of new ways that our shop can transform and evolve.  My own vacations revolve around visiting fiber artists and yarn shops all over the world.

My mother taught me to knit when I was a teenager.  She was, and still is, my mentor.  I still have my first sweater although you will not see me wearing it unless you come to my house.  I picked up knitting again when my youngest daughter turned three years old.  I found myself sitting through piano, swimming, and other such lessons and needed something constructive to do.  I started knitting scarves and became addicted.  I enjoy knitting sweaters, skirts and other wearables now, although I would hedge a guess that I have made somewhere in the range of 40 - 50 felted purses.  I hope someday when my girls are older (I have three teenagers), I can knit things for them that they too will enjoy.  Right now hats and scarves are about the only things they will be caught in that's hand knit.

I have discovered over the years that I enjoy the prospect of picking out my next project almost as much as I like knitting it.  Because of that, I truly like helping customers with theirs.  I am always glad to lend my honest opinion if asked.  I can't ask for a much better job than that, doing something I really enjoy!

My Aunt taught me how to "knit" (hmmmm) when I was about 8 years old.  The only thing I remember knitting was little red squares that I safety pinned on my doll as diapers.  So maybe you can't count that as being a knitter at that early age.  I just had the very basic start which probably didn't include knowing how to purl.

My real start came in 1959 when I got a job at IDS.  I noticed a coworker who would go off on her breaks and knit.  I soon realized I had someone who could actually teach me how to read a pattern & she was willing to help me make my first sweater.  So off to Daytons I went to purchase my yarn & pattern.  Yes, in the "old" days Daytons did actually carry yarn!  Oh! THE GOOD OLD DAYS!  Well it turned out pretty nice... one exception... my friend left on maternity leave just when I got to the buttonholes.  Well needless to say I just kept going without doing them & just sewed the buttons on and called it done!  And to this day I still have my first sweater & still proud of it!!!  I might even just show up at the shop wearing it some day!!  Retro is back!!!!!!

So that is how I got hooked on knitting.  It has been my passion since then & gotten me through some very tough times throughout my life.  I can look at various garments & know just what I was going through at the time of making them.  I have many memories knitted right into my treasured projects.

I love "playing" in the Knit'n from the Heart yarn shop. After 28 years of "work," I found the best retirement play ever and have learned much from the staff, students, divas, and customers.

I learned to knit from my Mom when I was young. Since that time, I have had it in my arsenal of needlework, but it has been a blast watching the resurgence and wild new fibers. It still makes me laugh when a customer comes in and asks for "4ply" because I am old enough to remember terms like that. Some of you might know I grew up in a small town in Wisconsin. (I am a cheesehead.) This is how small. Once I got passed dime store yarn, my Mom called someone on the phone to make an appointment. Although I was not sure where we were going, I went along. Imagine this....the mailman's wife sold yarn out of her spare bedroom. We dug through boxes, each stacked with different colors. I remember her helping Mom find something appropriate for me to knit and my own needles. I think it was yellow wool. The good kind. Now I am knitting with cottons, alpaca, merino, bamboo and have a huge selection of the "good kind" at my fingertips at Knit'n from the Heart.

With a fifth grandson on the way in December, I am crazy into Itty Bitty hats and Debbie Macomber's Blossom Street baby blankets. I'm just wishing I could make something pink sometime. I knit with friends from my old work and for family, but love my Wednesday mornings at Knit'n from the Heart with the Divas. I always learn something new from the members. Why don't you come and join us. The coffee is always on!
